Monitoring & Evaluation & Research

Participatory M&E - Since 2005 MTGK has been setting up a participatory M&E and research programme.  We have been asking ourselves the question:  if we say we are improving ‘life skills’, what exactly are they and how do we measure them?  This challenge has been taken on by a team of four girls in MTGK.  They have developed indicators for ‘confidence’, ‘teamwork’, ‘leadership skills’, ‘self esteem’ and ‘organisational skills’ and are piloting their methods in focus group discussion this year (2006).

We are also developing a quantitative data base to consolidate all documents, such as match reports, team lists, lists of tournament and league participants, training courses held, peer education sessions carried out etc, which are currently held as hard copies in the office.

We use a number of qualitative methods and tools for collecting and analyzing information.  We use participatory rural appraisal techniques such as fact sheets and problem trees.  This gives us information on football teams and the challenges they face so that we can learn from their experiences.  We use focus group discussions, particularly in dealing with the impact of our peer education programme and in analysing the extent to which life skills have been developed.  We also carry out more in depth individual interviews and run a writing competition for girls to get their views on how MTGK has impacted on their lives.
