Leah Gandi
When Leah, as a drop out in primary school, joined MTG she was not able to make any decision for herself and she couldn't express herself in front of others. Being a peer educator, referee, coach and office assistant has helped her to grow in a confident young woman. Leah plans to build her own shop in Malomani, her rural home in Kilifi, and help the girls their to learn skills and earn money.
"Before I joined Moving the Goalposts Kilifi I was unable to make any decisions for myself. Also I couldn't play football nor express myself in front of many people. When I joined MTG I started by educating myself about what HIV and AIDS is and after that I educated my friends". Leah joined MTG as a player and soon became a peer educator. As a volunteer she was also trained as a referee and a coach. In May 2005 she was employed as an office assistant.
Leah is happy with the chances she got through MTG. "I dropped out of school in standard six. Girls like me, who are not educated, usually stay at home and sell fish and mahamri (fried bread balls) in their villages. I would probably have given birth by now without getting married. I am thankful to this organization because it doesn't look at the level of my education. They always work hand in hand and support me. Through MTG I learned computer and football skills and I learned how to make a budget. I was in the committee that built MTG's new office. This opened my mind and gave me the idea to start a kiosk and build my own shop in Malomani, my home village."
Leah, as a beneficiary of the MTG project, has developed into a confident young woman who appreciates the opportunities she has got. Now she wants to give chances to other girls. "I want to help girls to learn some skills and to earn money in the shop in Malomani. I also want to start a tree nursery where young women can grow and sell trees."
